Shampooing is primarily to clean the hair and scalp from foreign matter which include dirt, natural scalp oil, hair cosmetics and skin debris without adversely affecting both the scalp and hair. Hair should be shampooed as often as necessary; frequency varies from individual to individual.

Improper cleansing allows a breeding place for disease causing bacteria. It can lead to scalp disorders and even hair loss. Generally oily hair is shampooed more often than someone with normal hair.

There are some key points to remember about shampoo. The natural pH of hair is 4.5 to 5.5. The pH is maintained by the combination of oil and sweat otherwise known as the acid mantle.

Prior to shampooing it is a good idea to brush your hair it helps to increase blood circulation and help to remove excess product.

There are many types of shampoos; but I will only go into what is over the counter or better yet your hairdresser. It is also not a good idea to shampoo on the day of a permanent colour treatment or permanent texturizing procedure (otherwise known as a permanent wave, perm, alkaline wave, acid wave).

All Purpose Shampoo: It helps to cleanse the hair without helping to correct any special condition.

Acid Balanced Shampoo: This is the same pH as your hair and scalp and it will not strip your hair. It is great for all hair types, particularly lightened, colour treated or dry and brittle hair.

Plain Shampoo: Cleanse normal hair but not recommended for chemically treated or damaged hair.

Clarifying Shampoo: Clarifying shampoos are high alkaline shampoo are used by clients who use a lot of hair cosmetics; paste, gel, gloss and hair spray. Follow manufactures directions and do not use on a regular basis because they may make the hair brittle and dry. I recommend my clients to use it every seven to ten days to remove all the build up and residue that is removed by other shampoos.

Anti Dandruff Shampoo: It helps to control dandruff and other scalp conditions.

A conditioner is designed to keep hair healthy, vibrant, and strong. Hair conditioners are used after shampooing hair; it softens and helps to detangle hair. There are variety types of conditioners and rinses; liquid rinses, thick creams and leave in conditioners. A conditioner is valuable because it can restore lustre, shine, manageability and strength to damaged hair. Most conditioners fall in the pH range of 3.5 – 6.0.

Instant Conditioners: Coat the hair shaft and restores moisture to hair. They do not have the capability to penetrate the cortex or replace keratin in the hair shaft. They coat the cuticle, the outside layer of the hair shaft.

Normalizing Conditioners: These conditioners are used by hairdressers after a chemical service to restore the pH balance of the hair and not sold to consumers.

Body-building Conditioners: These conditioners are protein based that will deposit proteins into the cortex. They are great for fine and limp hair. This allows the person with limp hair to hold a hair style much longer because it modifies the moisture and protein balance.

Moisturizing Conditioners: These types of conditioners are recommended for people with dry, damaged and brittle hair whether it has been altered by heat sources like flat irons, blow dryers and/or curling irons along with chemically alter hair. The benefits are paramount as they lock in moisture into the hair shaft. They are filled with humectants that are sometimes derived from hydrolyzed animal proteins.
