The Seven Basic Haircuts

There are seven basic haircuts that can be combined with one another or alone to achieve your desired look. Haircutting fundamentals are guided by great haircutting techniques. These techniques consist of sectioning, parting, distribution, projection angle, finger and shear position along with a design line. This is all to achieve your needs and look that you want.

Solid Form: Is all the rage these days. Many actresses's are wearing it on the red carpet. The hair is one length also known as a bob, dutchboy or a blunt cut.

Graduated Form: Is also known as a wedge. It was big during the 80s.

Increase-Layer Form: The haircut is also known as a shag. It is extremely layered and great for using the curling iron with to give yourself much volume.

Uniformly-Layered Form: It is also known as a layered cut. All the hair is the same length when held out at 90 degrees.

Combination Form: This is achieved when 2 or more forms are used in one cut.

Gradation: Very short around the ears and nape and gradually goes to longer hair on a man.

Square Combination Form: It is also known as a box cut or flat top. Simon Cowell is a good example of this cut.

Haircutting can be defined as the artistic carving or removing of hair lengths with shears, taper shears, razors and/or clippers to create various forms and shapes.

Principles of Hair Design

The principles of hair design are proportion, balance, rhythm, emphasis and harmony. By using these principles it will help to improve our dialogue when it comes to our consultation.

Proportion is what I call scale. As in decorating a home you would not put a three seat reclining sofa in a small room. It would make the room appear to be smaller than it actually is. A person with a small chin and a large forehead would look out of proportion. If this your case you would want a hair style that would give an illusion of proper proportion. It is essential when choosing a hair style that you take your body's shapes and sizes into consideration. If you have wide shoulders you would pick a hairstyle that is in a large form; but, not beyond your shoulders. Hairstyle's should not go beyond the center of your shoulders regardless of body structure.

Balance is the harmonious arrangement of your hair. It could be symmetrical or unsymmetrical. A symmetrical cut is a hairstyle that is the same length, volume and the same distance on both sides when viewing from the front. The sides may have the same shape or different shape but still has the same volume. An asymmetrical hair style is larger on one side which is brought in closer to the center of the face. It can be either horizontal or diagonal.

Rhythm is the pattern that creates movement, it could be slow or fast. Like music rhythm can be simple or it can change. A fast rhythm would be tight curls that bounce to every step you make. a slower rhythm would be larger shapes and longer curls. In a simple rhythm the same hairstyle is repeated throughout the hair. For instance a finger wave would be considered to be boring because there are no variations throughout the style. In increasing the rhythm the design patterns may be the same but it becomes larger. This is more pleasing to the eye. in decreasing rhythm the pattern starts with a larger pattern or movement that decreases. In alternating rhythm the pattern starts from small to large and back to small. This variety creates visual interest to the eye.

The emphasis in a hairstyle is the spot that the eye sees first. Then the eyes move to the rest of the hairstyle. One may have a hairstyle that is has fabulous balance but, still looks drab and boring. This is where emphasis comes into play. Interesting hair styles always have a focus area. To create a emphasis you can use texture, color, change in form and/or ornamentation

Harmony is the most important of the art principles that go into bringing all the designs in together. A style that is pleasing to the eye with a great focal point and blends nicely into the rest of the style, great color(s) and proper proportion to your body type is harmonious
